What is the body mass index?

The body mass index (BMI) is a tool that often is used to measure body fat. It is based on height and weight. A person with a BMI of 18.5–24.9 is a normal weight, ...while someone with a BMI of 25–29.9 is considered overweight; BMI of 30 or higher is considered obese and at highest risk. Around 5% of Pakistan’s population is classified as obese.

What health problems are associated with being overweight?

Many serious health problems are linked to being overweight or obese. These include, but aren’t limited to:...

1- Cardiovascular disease
2- Diabetes
3- Gallbladder disease
4- Certain types of cancer, such as cancer of the endometrium, breast, colon, and gallbladder; obesity also may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.
5- Sleep apnea
6- Joint disease
7- Infertility

How can I lose weight?

To lose weight, you need to use up more calories than you take in. The most consistent, clinically proven healthy way to do so is by getting regular exercise ...combined with a program of healthy eating, and regular weight monitoring to measure and control progress. Eat fewer foods that are high in sugar and fat. An easy way to cut calories and to reduce the amount of sugar you eat is to avoid sugary drinks, such as soft drinks and sweetened tea. How fast you lose, or gain weight can also be influenced by factors such as genetics and endocranial and thyroid health.

How much exercise do I need to lose weight and keep it off?

People who have lost weight and kept it off generally get 60–90 minutes of moderate intensity activity on most days of the week.... You do not have to do this all at once. For instance, you can exercise for 20–30 minutes three times a day. There are also many popular fitness programs available for one to consider, from the famous 42 Day Challenge to the CrossFit regimen.

Exercise promotes general health and increases mental well-being: It not only helps your endurance, flexibility and muscle strength, it can also help alleviate depression and anxiety in some people. Your risk of heart disease, colon cancer, and diabetes decreases with regular physical activity.

I have tried to lose weight with exercise, but I am still overweight. What’re my other options?

For some people, it may be hard to lose weight through exercise alone. If you have a BMI greater than 30, or a BMI of at least 27 with certain medical conditions, ...such as diabetes or heart disease, medications may be able to help you lose weight.

There are also specialised diets to consider that advocate healthy sustained weight loss, such as the Keto diet: a very low-carb, high-fat diet that shares many similarities with the Atkins and involves drastically reducing carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. This reduction in carbs puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient at burning fat for energy. It also turns fat into ketones in the liver, which can supply energy for the brain Ketogenic diets can cause massive reductions in blood sugar and insulin levels. This, along with the increased ketones, has numerous health benefits

In some cases, (people with a BMI of 40 or greater) a special type of surgery, bariatric surgery, may be an option. Bariatric surgery can result in significant weight loss. This may decrease the risk of the serious health problems associated with obesity, though still require a change in lifestyle and eating habits, as well as active weight monitoring to be beneficial in the long term
